Awesome story, Toshi - I've only done a 200k so far, but want to go a bit farther. I also have an AHH, and think it's a great rando bike! Glad the Rivet worked out. I'm on a B17 but had some numbness after the 200k. May try one soon. Also have to try the SP hub on my new Hunqa!

Way to go! 600k is a longgggg way!

I have found the tandem to be much more stable than a tag along. Also, unless the adult is just toodling along the gearing on the tag along is not enough to allow the child to input much force so most of their weight is on the seat. My son could ride 25 miles without complaining on the tandem and on the tag along he would complain after about 5 miles that his butt hurt. Both were set up correctly. You can get a good older tandem for $300-$500 dolars and you can resell it for nearly that much when you are done so the price shouldn't be the deciding factor unles one doesn't have the available capital.

[...] I talked to Carlos Duque and reminded him that he took a great picture of Tomo and me on our first brevet as we finished the SFR populaire a couple of years ago. That was still one of my best rides ever! http://ttoshi.net/bicycling/blog/?p=37 [...]

Toshi, this is totally awesome! We used two tandems with our kids (and two kid stoker setups) but have never had a triplet. What a great way to travel; it looks like so much fun for the kids. Keep them riding as long as you can! It took for only one of our two -- the one who set up the cross-country ride we did in 2006. He's 33 now, the bike is his main form of transport, he's never owned a car, and it all started on the tandem. May your kids enjoy it as much as ours did.

Definitely agreed. To have the kid enjoy the outdoors in a safe environment with their parents and learn to love bicycling is a wonderful thing! A tandem bike is a big commitment, so the tag-along is a great alternative that is highly accessible to most parents.

I agree with you about the kid's not having to work, but the all idea of the tag long bike is to introduce them to riding a bike. I think the most important job initially, is to make them safe and to get them enjoying riding a bike
